hp 89a vs 89x — same black LaserJet toner for the same printers. The only real difference is page yield (and cost per page).
89A (CF289A) is the standard-yield black — about 5,000 pages. Buy this when you print lightly.
89X (CF289X) is the high-yield black — about 10,000 pages. Same fit. Fewer swaps. Better cost per page if the printer runs often.
| Feature | 89A | 89X |
|---|---|---|
| Black yield | ~5,000 (CF289A) | ~10,000 (CF289X) |
| Best for | Light / occasional | Regular office use |
| Printers | LaserJet Enterprise M507; MFP M528 | |
Mono black only — there is no 89 color pack. 89Y is a separate ultra-high-yield SKU, not this A vs X decide. Not 87A/87X or 26A/26X. Read the label on the cartridge already in the printer.
We sell a compatible 89A black (CF289A) and a compatible 89X high-yield black (CF289X), chips installed.
When to buy which: replace toner more than a couple of times a year → start with 89X (about 2× the pages). Occasional printing → 89A is enough. If the label says 89X, stay on X unless you intentionally want fewer pages per cartridge.
FAQ
What is hp 89a vs 89x in one sentence?
Same M507 / M528 printers; 89A is standard yield (~5,000), 89X is high yield (~10,000).
Are 89A and 89X for the same printers?
Yes. Same family. Only the yield changes.
Is there an 89 4-pack?
No. These are single black cartridges only.
Does compatible toner void the printer warranty?
Using a non-HP cartridge does not by itself void HP’s limited printer warranty. Damage HP attributes to a non-HP cartridge is a different question.
HP+ / Instant Ink?
Those programs do not accept compatible toner. If you are not sure the printer was never enrolled, ask before you order.
