Introduction

If you own an HP LaserJet 4201 or 4301 Series Printer, turning off printer updates is extremely important to maintain compatibility with third-party cartridges like the HP 210A cartridges and the HP 210X cartridges. Brands like HP issue updates to these printers over your internet connection to try and prevent you from saving money by using compatible cartridges. Disabling automatic updates will help you avoid these problems. In this guide, we'll walk you through the exact steps to turn off updates on your HP LaserJet 4201 and 4301 Series Printers, giving you more control over your device and peace of mind.

Turning Off Updates

  1. Using your printer's navigational controls, enter the Menu.
  2. Inside the Menu, please then find and enter Settings.
  3. Inside Settings, please then find and enter Firmware Update.
  4. Inside Firmware Update, please then find and enter Auto Update.
  5. The printer will then ask you to sign in. Please scroll to the bottom to find and enter Sign-In Method.
  6. Inside Sign-In Method, please find and choose Device Administrator.
  7. When it prompts you to enter the password, you can find the password on the white sticker on the toner cartridge tray inside your printer. Please open up the printer's front panel to reveal the tray, and look for the sticker. There should be a PIN on this sticker.
  8. Enter the PIN in the Password field and then hit Done. It will say "Welcome, Device Administrator!"
  9. You will then be taken to a screen explaining firmware updates. Please scroll to the bottom and select Next.
  10. On the following screen, please find and choose Do Not Check. Make sure it is selected!
  11. That's it! Now you can have peace of mind that compatible cartridges will forever work in your printer.
