HP's toner compatibility paper for its managed 500-series printers marks both the CF287A and CF287X as compatible with the E52545dn and E52545c. Which M501? A note on the name

The printer covered here is the black-and-white HP LaserJet Pro M501, sold as the M501n and M501dn. HP's user guide for it lists only the 87A and 87X as toner, so it does not use the HP 501A, 502A or 503A cartridges, despite the similar numbers.

How to confirm your model

Check the model name on the front of the printer, for example "LaserJet Enterprise M506dn" or "LaserJet Pro M501n", and match it to the table above. You can also take out the cartridge that's in the printer now: an HP 87 cartridge is labeled CF287A or CF287X.

Replacing the cartridge

  1. Open the printer's top cover to reach the toner cartridge.
  2. Lift the old cartridge out.
  3. Unpack the new cartridge and remove any packing material.
  4. Slide the new cartridge into place.
  5. Close the cover.

Your printer's user guide has model-specific steps if anything looks different.
