TN850 is about 8,000 pages. It covers a wide HL-L / MFC-L set, including many L5000 / L5200 / L5700-class machines as well as higher L6200 / L6400 and MFC-L6700 / L6900 models.
TN880 is about 12,000 pages. Same fit on the overlap printers only: HL-L6200 / L6250 / L6300 / L6400 and MFC-L6700 / L6750 / L6800 / L6900. It does not fit the lower L5000 / L5200 / L5700 class that TN850 covers.

When to buy which: first confirm the printer is on the overlap list. If it is, and you replace toner often → TN880 (about 1.5× the pages). If the printer is L5000 / L5200 / L5700-class, or the label already says TN850 and the machine is not on the TN880 list → stay on TN850. Never pick TN880 for yield alone when the printer is outside the overlap.
